Getting to Tangier
By ferry, plane, train, coach or car
Tangier lies at the entrance of the Strait of Gibraltar and has two ferry ports, Tanger Ville in the city's bay and Tanger Med, about 40 km east. The city also has an airport, is served by ONCF trains including Al Boraq to Rabat and Casablanca, and has CTM coaches to towns such as Chefchaouen.

By ferry
Tangier has two ports for passengers. Tanger Ville lies in the city's bay between Cap Spartel and Cap Malabata and, since December 2010, takes only cruise ships and the fast ferries from Tarifa. Tanger Med lies about 40 km east of the city. Ferries from Algeciras arrive there every day after a crossing of about 1 h 30, and weekly lines connect it with Barcelona, Sète, Marseille and Genoa.
Ports, lines and the way into the city are on the ferries page, and the daily crossing from Algeciras has its own page: Algeciras - Tanger Med ferry.
By plane
Tangier has its own airport. What to know when you land, and how you continue into the city or on to the ferry ports, is on the page Tangier Airport.
By train
Tangier is on the network of the Moroccan railway ONCF. Three kinds of train serve the city: Al Boraq, which runs from Tanger Ville station to Kenitra, Rabat Agdal and Casa Voyageurs, Al Atlas and TNR. You can buy and reserve tickets for all three online on the ONCF website, which also sells tickets for its connecting coaches. Tanger Ville is also the name of the railway station, from which taxis run to the port of Tanger Med, so do not mix it up with the port in the bay.
By coach
The coach company CTM runs coaches from Tangier. To Chefchaouen, they cover 112 km in about 2 h 30, with more than 4 departures a day between 08:15 and 20:15. You can book on the CTM website or at a CTM agency in Tangier. More ideas for trips out of the city are on our day trips page.
By car
If you arrive with your car at Tanger Med, you reach Tangier on the RN16 or on the motorway; the Tanger Est junction is 35 km and about 20 minutes from the port. When you drive into Morocco, the authorities record your registration number, and you have to leave the country in the same vehicle. Carry your insurance, licence and registration documents.
By road, Tétouan is 63.1 km from Tangier, about 1 h 18. Chefchaouen is 112.3 km away, about 2 h 14, and Rabat 249.9 km, about 2 h 45. Poor lighting makes driving at night dangerous, so plan longer drives for daylight.
Getting around the city
Since December 2025, Tangier's city buses have been run by Issal Tanger, a joint company of CTM Group and Transdev Maroc. For taxis, agree the fare before you set off or make sure the driver uses the meter. Many taxis booked through ride-sharing apps may be unregulated and unlicensed, and their drivers may not be registered with the authorities.
