Departing from Algeciras

The ferry to Tanger Med leaves from the port of Algeciras in southern Spain. Ferries sail every day, the crossing takes about 1 h 30, and they carry foot passengers as well as vehicles. If you bring a vehicle, keep its insurance, your licence and the registration documents with you: the Moroccan authorities record your registration number on entry, and you have to leave Morocco in the same vehicle.

Documents

With a British passport, you can visit Morocco without a visa for up to 90 days. The passport must be valid for at least 3 months after the day you arrive and must not be damaged. Children who travel with adults other than their parents also need a parental authorisation in addition to their own travel documents. More on entry rules is in our travel tips.

On board

Moroccan police officers travel on the ships to Tanger Med, and your passport is stamped on board during the crossing. Every passenger has to appear in person in front of the officers, as no travel document is processed without its holder. This spares you waiting at the border when you arrive.

Arriving at Tanger Med

Tanger Med lies about 40 km east of Tangier. Foot passengers take a shuttle from the ship to the gare maritime, where customs checks take place. From there, taxis and city buses leave for Tangier. With a car, you follow the port's own exit route to the customs booths in the Automobile Access zone and then join the RN16 towards the city. How to continue from Tangier by train, coach or car is explained on getting to Tangier, and the other lines into Tanger Med are on the ferries page. If you arrive late in the day, our page on where to stay helps you choose an area of the city.

Returning to Algeciras

For the crossing back to Spain, be at Tanger Med 2 hours before departure, on foot and with a vehicle. At peak times, the boarding time depends on traffic in the port. The shipping company's counter in the port hands out your boarding card once your booking is confirmed, and it shows your boarding time and quay. After police and customs checks, foot passengers reach the quay by port shuttle, while cars drive there on a separate route.

From Tangier, a taxi takes you from Tanger Ville railway station to the port. By car, you take the RN16 or the motorway; from the Tanger Est junction it is 35 km to the port, about 20 minutes. With your boarding card number you can follow waiting times and quay changes on the Tanger Med Passagers website.

If a departure to Algeciras is cancelled for technical, weather or other reasons, Tanger Med helps you board a ship of another shipping company. This assistance starts after 2 hours of waiting from the departure time on your boarding card.
