Tangier Airport

Arrival, taxis and onward travel

Tangier Airport is where flights to Tangier land. On arrival, your passport is checked and stamped, and your luggage passes customs controls. From the airport you continue by taxi or car into Tangier, and from the city by ONCF train or to the ferry ports of Tanger Ville and Tanger Med.

Arriving in Morocco

With a British passport, you can visit Morocco without a visa for up to 90 days as a tourist. The passport must be valid for at least 3 months after the day you arrive and must not be damaged, as travellers with damaged passports have been refused entry. Border officials should stamp your passport when you enter Morocco. Check that they do, because some travellers without an entry stamp have had difficulties leaving the country. To stay longer than 90 days, you request an extension at a Moroccan police station. The full rules for British passport holders are in the UK government's travel advice for Morocco, and more on preparing your trip is in our travel tips.

Customs and luggage

Airports in Morocco use technology to detect items that customs rules prohibit, and this also covers the luggage of passengers in transit. Do not accept items from strangers, and do not leave your bags unattended. Morocco has a zero-tolerance approach to drugs, including cannabis, and possession carries long prison sentences and heavy fines, even for passengers who are only passing through.

Taxis and buses in the city

If you take a taxi, agree the fare before you set off or make sure the driver uses the meter. Many taxis booked through ride-sharing apps may be unregulated and unlicensed, and their drivers may not be registered with the authorities. More on getting around safely is on our safety page. If your flight lands late, our page on where to stay helps you choose an area of the city in advance.

Since December 2025, Tangier's city buses have been run by Issal Tanger, a joint company of CTM Group and Transdev Maroc.

Driving

Poor lighting makes driving at night dangerous in Morocco, so plan longer drives for daylight. By road, Tétouan is 63.1 km from Tangier, about 1 h 18, and Chefchaouen 112.3 km, about 2 h 14. Ideas for trips out of the city are on our day trips page.

On by train or ferry

From Tanger Ville station, ONCF runs Al Boraq trains to Kenitra, Rabat Agdal and Casa Voyageurs as well as Al Atlas and TNR trains, with tickets bought and reserved online. For the ferry, Tanger Med lies about 40 km east of the city. A taxi takes you there from Tanger Ville railway station, and by car you take the RN16 or the motorway; from the Tanger Est junction it is 35 km to the port, about 20 minutes. Be at Tanger Med 2 hours before a ferry to Algeciras and 5 hours before the ferries to Barcelona, Sète, Marseille and Genoa. The fast ferries to Tarifa leave from Tanger Ville, the port in the city's bay. All ports and lines are on the ferries page, and trains and coaches on getting to Tangier.
