Tangier travel tips

Entry, everyday safety, museums and getting around

If you travel on a British passport, it must be valid for at least 3 months after the date you arrive, and you can stay up to 90 days as a tourist without a visa. Plan museum visits around Tuesday, when the Kasbah museums, Dar Niaba and Villa Harris close. Trains run from Tangier, and CTM coaches go to Chefchaouen.

Entry with a British passport

The rules on this page apply to British passport holders; the full entry requirements for Morocco are on gov.uk.

  • Passport: it must have an expiry date at least 3 months after the date you arrive, and it must not be damaged; travellers with damaged passports have been refused entry
  • Visa: you can visit Morocco without a visa for up to 90 days for tourism; to stay longer, request an extension at a Moroccan police station
  • Entry stamp: border officials should stamp your passport when you enter; some travellers without an entry stamp have had difficulties leaving Morocco
  • Customs: there are strict rules on goods you take into or out of Morocco, and you must declare anything that may be prohibited or subject to tax or duty
  • Post: it is illegal to send passports to or through Morocco by post

Lost or stolen passport

If your British passport is lost or stolen, you apply for an emergency travel document from the British embassy. To leave Morocco you also need a police report: a "déclaration de perte" for a lost passport or a "déclaration de vol" for a stolen one. Report the loss or theft in the city where it happened, so in Tangier if it happened here.

Everyday safety

Petty crime such as pickpocketing and bag-snatching is common in tourist areas, especially in the medina and on beaches, so avoid quiet areas after dark and do not carry large amounts of money or valuables. If you use a guide in the medina, make sure they have an official badge and permission from the local authority.

Alcohol is available in licensed venues, but drinking it in the street is illegal and can lead to arrest. Morocco has a zero-tolerance approach to drugs, cannabis included. Ask before you photograph people, especially children. Laws, taxis and driving are covered in more detail on the safety page.

Museums closed on Tuesdays

Four museums in Tangier open 10:00-18:00 and close on Tuesdays:

  • Kasbah Museum of Mediterranean Cultures, Place de la Kasbah
  • Espace d'art contemporain, Place de la Kasbah, in a 17th-century former prison
  • Dar Niaba, 41 Rue Siaghine in the old medina
  • Villa Harris, Boulevard Mohammed VI, facing the Mediterranean

On a Tuesday, visit the Tangier American Legation instead, the only National Historic Landmark in Morocco. It opens Monday to Friday 10:00-17:00 and at weekends 10:00-15:00. More on the Kasbah and medina pages.

Trains, coaches and city buses

  • Trains: ONCF runs Al Boraq trains from Tanger Ville to Kenitra, Rabat Agdal and Casa Voyageurs, as well as Al Atlas and TNR services, and you can buy tickets online
  • Coaches: CTM coaches link Tangier with other towns, among them Chefchaouen, about 2 h 30 away; you can book online or at the CTM agency in Tangier on the Route de Tétouan
  • City buses: Issal Tanger, a joint venture of CTM and Transdev Maroc, has run Tangier's city buses since December 2025
  • Taxis: agree the fare in advance or make sure the meter is running; petit taxi drivers often pick up other passengers on the way

For Chefchaouen, Tetouan and Asilah, see day trips.

Arriving by ferry or plane

Ferries from Algeciras, about 1 h 30 away, arrive at Tanger Med daily, and the port also has weekly sailings to Barcelona, Sète, Marseille and Genoa. Tanger Med lies about 40 km east of Tangier, while Tanger Ville, the port in the city, has received only cruise ships and fast ferries since December 2010. More on the ferries and airport pages, and on the weather in Tangier.

Sunday service at St Andrew's

St Andrew's Church, the Anglican church of Tangier, stands at Rue d'Angleterre 50 in the Socco. Holy Communion is held every Sunday at 11:00 and lasts about an hour, and all are welcome at the weekly service.
